It has to be said, I’m very partial to seal stories. And this one, well, what can I say, it’s just beautiful. The illustrations of The Storm Seal are one in a million, they really bring to life the seascape of the northern coast. I love just opening the book and can get lost in the pictures without even reading the rather lovely story.
The book tells the story of Peter, an old man, who finds a stranded seal pup and nurtures it to health. The children of the village get very interested in the seal and when Peter is ill, they look after it, but as they do so, they use the seal as a toy. Once healthy again, Peter explains why this is not the right way to treat a seal pup and realises that it is time to bring it back to the sea. With the seal, the children and the old man have become friends, and the children have learned how to look after animals the right way. It is also a story about letting go and caring for one another, there really is quite a lot going on in this story.
