Today’s storytime book takes us on the long journey to India. In Elephant Dance, Ravi listens to the captivating stories his grandfather tells about India, where the sun is like a ferocious tiger and monsoon rains cascade like waterfalls. The stories are rich in natural scenes and fuel the imagination. The journey to India through the stories and images introduce children aged 4 – 10 to a different culture, different landscapes and different animals:
“High in the north are the Himalayan mountains. The snow on their tops is a giant ice cream, very cold and white, melting on your tongue. It keeps the mountain tops cool when the tiger sun roars at midday.”
The language is full of imagery that will encourage exploring further and talking about the places introduced by the book. To help along, the story is followed by notes about India, to take the learning further.
We love the book because it takes us on an imaginary journey, both to a new place but also into language because the words are beautiful and poetic. What’s more, the intergenerational relationship between grandfather and grandson through storytelling is a great setting.
The book comes as paperback and retails at £6.99.
